Texas heating sits idle for months and then has to work on short notice. In Dallas–Fort Worth that usually means a gas furnace. In a lot of Greater Austin it means a heat pump with electric backup. The failure modes are not the same, and the advice should not be either.

Often no. Gas furnaces are more common across Dallas–Fort Worth. Heat pumps are more common in Greater Austin, especially in newer all-electric neighborhoods. We service both.
Turn it off and have it checked. Burning dust at the first start of the season can be normal for a minute. A persistent burning smell, soot, or a headache in the house is not.
In the fall, before you need it. A furnace or heat pump that has sat since March deserves a real test cycle.
